Hydro and immersion cooling for ASIC miners

Most miners cool themselves with fans. Two other ways take the heat away with liquid, and both are growing fast in new farms.

Hydro cooling

In a hydro miner, coolant flows through cold plates that sit on the hashboards. It carries the heat out of the machine through a closed loop to a cooler outside. The miner itself has no fans, runs quietly and takes far more power in the same space than an air-cooled one.

Immersion cooling

Immersion goes a step further: the whole machine hangs in a tank of non-conducting fluid. Manufacturers build versions of their miners for this, without fans.

What it changes

• No fans to watch. A monitoring system that expects four fans raises a false alarm on every hydro machine.
• Other temperatures matter. What goes into the loop, what comes out, and how much flows.
• More power per machine. A single failed unit is a bigger loss, so it should be noticed sooner.
• Heat that can be used. Warm liquid is far easier to pass on than warm air.
